People are responding to posts ...
What they are stating has very often nothing to do with what was written.
So what is going on? What people are writing and attacking is very probably part of their own personal hidden site. There are things which they don't accept within themselves and so fighting outside by projecting it into other people, no matter if it fits or not. Or there might be parts they want urgently to be realised, but don't dare to receive, so they reject... Or whatever of the many possibilities there are.
So people attack others, insult them and express their hate. - The others are responding and defending themselves, in the same manner as they were attacked. There would not be a real need to defend, but people like these kind of games. Sometimes it would be only necessary to put things straight, but the discussions are not about 'matter-of-fact-things' mostly they serve just as a way to express ones feelings...
Discussions are used for self confirmation by fighting against each other. This goes on over the whole Usenet and indeed it is not very creative and often quite disgusting... The entire Net is suffering from this and there should be done something serious about it, because many intelligent and sensitive people are rejected from the Net because of this governing attitude. As people are mostly identified with concepts and so defending these ideas strongly, because this strengthens their personality. They are using any possibility to be confirmed and there is no way that they drop their own idea because that would diminish themselves and so they are all fighting against all the other ideas. The Inter/Usenet seems to be a big playground for these kind of games... A world wide battlefield... Isn't it time to come to something more essential? To clear up and also be more creative instead of turning always around oneself and the other?

*Indeed, we do have a problem* because of that, people are suffering, even they 'enjoy' it, but although if they want, they don't find a way out of this dilemma. They are just stuck in the system... So let us talk seriously about it and find ways out of it... This we will do *together*. The Use/Internet could be an ideal space for this! What is needed is the willingness to understand what really goes on. To be willing to discover our own background or structure...
